WILLIAMS CALLS MEDICAL MALPRACTICE INSURANCE MEASURE AN IMPORTANT FIRST STEP TOWARD REFORM HARRISBURG, March 13, 2002 -- Medical malpractice insurance legislation which passed the Senate today is an important first step, Sen. Constance H. Williams said, but more reforms are needed. "I'm glad we're able to send a message to Pennsylvania's physicians that we're willing to take action," Williams (D-Montgomery/Delaware) said. "I think it shows a good-faith effort that will allow them to continue to practice here." Williams said several areas still concern her. "The law should require that so-called expert witnesses in malpractice trials be qualified experts in the same medical discipline as the defendant," Williams said. She noted that the bill that passed the Senate today places some restrictions on ostensible agency, and Williams said she will be watching very carefully to see how the courts handle the issue of venue. "I believe the legislation passed today offers some measure of relief to physicians struggling under the burden of unfair insurance premiums," Williams said. "We need to build on the spirit of cooperation that brought us to this point." |
