WILLIAMS ANNOUNCES NEW PROGRAM TO PROVIDE HEALTH CARE COVERAGE FOR WORKERS WITH DISABILITIES HARRISBURG, March 18, 2002 – Senator Constance H. Williams today announced the implementation of a new program that will provide health care coverage, via Medicaid, for workers with disabilities. This new program, Medical Assistance for Workers with Disabilities (MAWD), began in January 2002 and was part of Governor Ridge’s and Governor Schweiker’s plan to utilize funds received from the Tobacco Settlement Agreement. "MAWD makes it possible for Pennsylvanians with disabilities to continue receiving Medicaid while working, even if their earnings increase above the limits for other Medicaid programs," said Williams (D-Montgomery/Delaware). The program will also allow working people with disabilities who are uninsured or underinsured to participate in the program. "The benefits of MAWD could include doctor visits, durable medical equipment, prescription drugs, hospice services, and drug and alcohol treatment, just to name a few," Williams said. "I believe in this program because it encourages people with disabilities to work while enjoying the financial benefits of being employed."
