SENIOR CENTERS FOCUS OF WEEK

HARRISBURG, MAY 3 – State Sen. Connie Williams spoke of the value of senior community centers when she introduced and the Senate approved a resolution declaring May 14th to the 20th as Senior Community Center Week in Pennsylvania.

“Pennsylvania’s senior centers provide a vast array of activities, programs and services. These centers are informational resources that provide classes on the latest computer technology and give older adults access to a variety of physical fitness programs,” Williams said. “I am always impressed with the senior community centers in my district, which constantly seem to be evolving and changing to meet the needs of their members.”

Pennsylvania has the second largest population of older adults per capita in the country and is home to more than 650 senior community centers.

“Senior centers are one of the most valuable resources for older adults,” Williams said. “In Pennsylvania we recognize the importance of providing services to help adults live healthier, more independent lives even longer. Having access to programs and services that we need as we age will allow us to enjoy a better quality of life. These centers give older adults the opportunity to stay active and healthy, continue to be life-long learners, share experiences and stay connected with friends and community members.”

In asking the Senate to declare Senior Community Center Week in Pennsylvania, Williams noted that senior centers provide opportunities for older adults to remain a valuable and vital part of their community and to grow older with dignity.
