WILLIAMS ANNOUNCES RECYCLING PERFORMANCE GRANT FOR UPPER MERION TOWNSHIP

HARRISBURG, May 14, 2002 - - State Senator Connie Williams today announced that a grant was recently awarded to Upper Merion Township, Montgomery County, under the Recycling Performance Grant Program. The program is sponsored by the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection.

The grant of $115,894 is based on the total tons recycled and the municipality’s overall recycling rate for Fiscal Year 2000.

The Recycling Performance Grant Program helps Pennsylvania communities increase their recycling rates and reach Governor Schweiker’s statewide goal of recycling 35 percent of all municipal waste by 2003.

"I am pleased that Upper Merion Township has received this grant to assist in its recycling efforts," Williams (D-Montgomery/Delaware) said.

This grant is in addition to the funds that the Department of Environmental Protection allocates to municipalities to establish and maintain recycling programs.
