NORRISTOWN COMMUNITY TO RECEIVE SMOKE DETECTORS THROUGH LOCAL “DOWN WITH DIRT” PROJECT HARRISBURG, June 20, 2003 - - Senator Connie Williams (D-Montgomery/Delaware) today announced that 50 smoke detectors have been donated by the Home Depot in King of Prussia to the residents of the 900 block of West Lafayette Street in Norristown. The detectors are being distributed in conjunction with the “Down With Dirt” community revitalization project and the local “Weed & Seed” program headed by Ms. Aretha Swift, and as part of a community-wide response to last month’s tragic fire on Lincoln Avenue. “Down With Dirt” is a neighborhood beautification project that chooses one block of Norristown every month of the summer to clean up and revitalize. The program demonstrates ways residents can become good neighbors. “I hope that these smoke detectors will prevent the kind of tragedy similar to the one that destroyed an entire block of Lincoln Avenue last month,” Williams said. Williams said that three more “Down With Dirt” days are planned for the summer. “The Norristown community is doing a wonderful job of building a network of neighborhood organizations and town watches that prevent crime, clean up the area, and create a sense of community,” Williams said. |
