NEW WEB SITE PROGRAM LOOKS AT CRIME

HARRISBURG, JUNE 24 – State Sen. Connie Williams would like constituents to be aware of a newly launched Web site designed to allow people to check crime statistics for their community.

The new site, “Are You Aware?” is run by the Pennsylvania State Police and supplements the Pennsylvania Uniform Crime Reporting System. It can be accessed by typing http://ucr.psp.state.pa.us in the web browser and clicking on the “Are You Aware?” icon.

“This new site is geared toward helping students and parents with crime statistics for Pennsylvania college campuses, for research papers, presentations and meetings and to allow people moving to a new neighborhood or relocating or starting a business to get a glimpse of crime in Pennsylvania communities,” Williams said. “Because the site is fairly new and participation is voluntary, not all law enforcement agencies are participating, so there may not be data for every community.”

The system is accessible 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

It is the responsibility of the Pennsylvania State Police to collect Uniform Crime Report data for the Commonwealth and distribute it to the Federal Bureau of Investigation. The new site was launched in May.
