FUNDING THE FINELLI TRACT

Letter to the Editor of News of Delaware County

 To the Editor:

The Finelli tract project would be a beautiful addition to Haverford Township, not to mention a wonderful way to preserve valuable open space. I have been following this local issue with interest and have offered my assistance several times. In correspondence that I sent in May, I suggested that there could be possible funding sources through the Department of Conservation and Natural Resources and their Bureau of Recreation and Conservation’s Community Conservation Partnerships Program. This program provides up to 50 percent in matching funds for preservation projects.

It was through this state program in 2003 that the township received $100,000 for the same project. At the time, the township had applied for $625,000 in what they considered to be a $1.25 million project to acquire three parcels of land. Unfortunately, the CCP program received $43 million in requests and, due to across-the-board budget cuts that took place last year, only could award $17 million.

I am happy to work with Haverford Township to try to secure additional funding on the state level. After reading your earlier June article, I must admit I was surprised that township commissioners contacted the federal government concerning the availability of state funding. I would think that my office is closer.

Sincerely,
