LOCAL ORGANIZATION RECOGNIZED FOR SERVICE

HARRISBURG, JUNE 30 – State Sen. Connie Williams gained unanimous support today for a resolution crediting an East Norriton nonprofit for its contributions to Pennsylvanians and to the state.

Angel Flight East provides free air transportation services to medical patients who cannot afford to use commercial air transportation.

“Angel Flight East took flight 13 years ago in the wake of Hurricane Andrew,” Williams said. “Since 1992, the organization has provided an invaluable service to Pennsylvanians and others across the country. Following the terrorist attack of Sept. 11, 2001, Angel Flight East pilots were given clearance alongside military aircraft to transport blood, emergency personnel and medical supplies to New York City and Washington, D.C.

“The organization has flown more than 2,000 missions. They have given, and continue to give hope to scores of medical patients requiring specialized care.”

Harry Morales, an avid pilot, founded the organization with the purpose of providing free transportation for medical patients who could not afford to utilize commercial air transportation and to provide services during natural disasters and other life events. Since that time, more than 500 members, including 400 pilots, have given their time, used their aircrafts and donated all expenses to help patients in need. There is no charge to the family, doctor, insurance company or anyone else for the free air transportation.

To volunteer as a pilot, individuals must have at least 300 hours of flight time, a current IFR rating and access to a 4+ seat aircraft. Teachers, construction workers, policemen, lawyers and retirees are among the volunteers who donate their time, expertise and aircrafts. Individual contributions are also welcome. The organization uses 95.5 cents of every $1 received through individual contributions, corporate sponsorships, fundraising events and foundation grants to fund missions of hope.
