PREPARING FOR FLOODING BEFORE IT HAPPENS

HARRISBURG, JULY 1 – The floods of 2004 were some of the most destructive in the history of Pennsylvania, according to state Sen. Connie Williams who is reminding people that now is the time to consider ways to protect their families and property from flooding that may occur this year.

“Early predictions are that Pennsylvania may face another difficult hurricane season,” Williams said. “Because there was such devastation during the 2004 storm cycle, it is important for all homeowners and businesses to consider ways to protect themselves and their property before disaster strikes. Homeowners that are counting on their standard insurance should know that it does not cover flood damage.”

According to the Federal Emergency Management Agency, by the end of 2004 nearly 40,000 Pennsylvanians had applied for federal relief. Despite this relief, many lost their homes and businesses.

The National Weather Service is predicting a 70 percent chance of an above-normal hurricane season along the Eastern seaboard for 2005.

“It is important for homeowners and businesses to learn about their risk, how to protect their property during and after a flood, and how to purchase flood insurance,” Williams said.

Information is available by calling the National Flood Insurance Program at 1-800-427-2419 or by going online at www.floodsmart.gov. Additionally, people can call the Pennsylvania Department of Insurance at 1-877-881-6388 or visit the department’s Web site at www.insurance.state.pa.us for brochures on flood insurance and what to do in the event of a disaster.

“Preparation is the best way to ensure that you, your family and your business will survive a natural disaster,” Williams said. “I encourage everyone to take a lesson from the flooding of 2004 and be prepared in 2005.”
