RECYCLING GRANTS AWARDED TO NORRISTOWN BOROUGH AND EAST NORRITON TOWNSHIP

HARRISBURG, July 17, 2002 - - State Senator Connie Williams today announced that grants were recently awarded to Norristown Borough and East Norriton Township of Montgomery County under the Recycling Performance Grant Program. The program is sponsored by the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection.

Norristown Borough received a grant of $36,956. East Norriton Township received a grant of $66,804. The grant allocations were based on the total tons recycled and each municipality’s overall recycling rate for Fiscal Year 2000.

The Recycling Performance Grant Program helps Pennsylvania communities increase their recycling rates and reach Governor Schweiker’s statewide goals of recycling 35 percent of all municipal waste by 2003.

The grant is in addition to the funds that the Department of Environmental Protection allocates to municipalities to establish and maintain recycling programs.

"These grants will provide Norristown Borough and East Norriton Township with the tools and materials necessary to recycle more effectively," Williams (D-Montgomery/Delaware) said.
