WILLIAMS URGES PURCHASE OF 9-11 "HEARTS OF STEEL" BRACELETS

HARRISBURG, August 22, 2002 - - State Senator Connie Williams (D-Delaware/Montgomery) today announced that "Hearts of Steel" bracelets are currently available for purchase to commemorate the heroes’ lives lost in the September 11, 2001 tragedy.

The "Hearts of Steel" project was created by State Senator Jane Orie.

"As we approach the one-year anniversary of the tragedy, I hope that the ‘Hearts of Steel’ project will help to further unite the American spirit," Williams said.

The proceeds from the "Heart of Steel" project will support the construction of a proper memorial for our national heroes.

Over the past nine months the project has raised over $500,000. The goal is to raise a total over $1 million by October 2002, when sales are scheduled to cease.

"I hope that many Pennsylvanians will purchase a bracelet to wear and remember the heroes’ lives that were lost," Williams said.

Bracelets are available in men’s and women’s sizes for $10 each. The bracelets can be purchased at Senator William’s district office in King of Prussia (610) 992-9790 or at her Havertown district office (610) 853-5433.

In addition to the "Hearts of Steel" project, the Pennsylvania Senate is sponsoring the "Candles for Freedom" campaign recognizing the one year anniversary of the September 11, 2001 tragedy.

A candle-lit vigil will be held on September 10 at 8 p.m. on Soldier’s Grove behind the Capitol to commemorate the lives lost in terrorist attacks.

Complimentary candles are also being provided by the Senate to be lit at home or at work on September 11 at 8:45 a.m. – precisely one year after the first jet liner crashed into the World Trade Center. To have a candle sent to your home or workplace, please register online at www.pasenate.com and click on the "Candles for Freedom" icon.
