STATE FUNDS AWARDED FOR NORRISTOWN PROJECTHARRISBURG, AUG. 27 – State Sen. Connie Williams thanked Gov. Edward Rendell for his attention to the needs of Montgomery County, following check presentations today. The governor, during a news conference at Ursinus College, called Williams a “driving force behind obtaining state money for Montgomery County.” During today’s event, the governor presented a check for $2.5 million to Norristown to help fund the construction of a new parking garage in the downtown area. This check represents the second presented by the governor for the garage project this year. In April the governor presented a $1.5 million check. The latest check brings the state’s investment in the local project to $4 million. The 450-space parking facility is expected to cost $8 million. “This garage is an important part of economic redevelopment in Norristown,” Williams said. “Not only will this project create new jobs, but it is expected to bring new revenue and investment to Norristown. It is the latest in a number of positive steps taken by the community toward revitalization.” In addition to state funds, Norristown will use federal, county and municipal resources, as well as private resources to create the facility, which will complement the historic character of the downtown. The garage will have retail space available on the street level. |
