SEPT. 7TH DEADLINE FOR APPLICATIONS TO FREE TRAINING SESSION

HARRISBURG, AUG. 27 – State Sen. Connie Williams announced that families interested in participating in a training program for young people with disabilities who are transitioning from high school to adulthood have until Sept. 7th to submit an application for this year's session.

Competence and Confidence: Partners in Policymaking (C2P2) is a free training project for young people with disabilities and their families that is offered by the Institute on Disabilities, Pennsylvania's University Center for Excellence in Developmental Disabilities at Temple University.

Eligible applicants include young people with disabilities between the ages of 16 and 21 who are willing to commit to attend six training sessions at the Holiday Inn City Line, 4100 Presidential Blvd., Philadelphia. The weekend training sessions are scheduled in September, October, November and December of 2007 and in February and March 2008. The Friday sessions will be held from 4 p.m. to 10 p.m. and Saturday sessions from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

"These sessions are designed to help young people with disabilities and their families better understand their options after high school," Williams said. "Training topics help families find resources and post-secondary options for education and employment, as well as learning more about housing options, conflict resolution and effective communication skills. In short, the topics help young people to be empowered to transition to adulthood with the skills and resources they need to succeed at whatever path they choose."

A family member must attend each training session with the young person. Training session dates are: Sept. 28 and 29, Oct. 19 and 20, Nov. 16 and 17, Dec. 7 and 8, Feb. 1 and 2 and March 7 and 8. Attendance is required at all six sessions.
