SPECIAL GUEST TO JOIN SEN. WILLIAMS AT 2006 SENIOR EXPO

HARRISBURG, SEPT. 11 – State Sen. Connie Williams is inviting older adults in the 17th Senatorial District to join her in October to not only one-stop shop for resources just for seniors, but also to hear from a well-known and respected guest speaker – Dr. Dan Gottlieb.

Williams' 2006 Senior Expo will be held from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday, Oct. 6th at the Plymouth Meeting Mall.

"This year's Senior Expo promises to be even bigger and better than previous expos. Now is the time to put it on your calendar and call and let me know that you plan to attend. One person that will be there this year is Dr. Gottlieb. He is not only a well-respected psychologist and family therapist, but also is the host of a radio talk show, a newspaper columnist and an author," Williams said. "He has an innate ability to understand people and to interpret and explain the challenges everyone will face in life. When he speaks to an audience, individuals usually feel like he is talking directly to them."

Dr. Gottlieb's story is a unique one. He began his practice as a family psychologist and family therapist in 1969. In 1979, while preparing a surprise for his wife on their 10th anniversary, he was in a near fatal automobile accident, which left him paralyzed from the chest down. In the years following the accident, he faced depression, divorce and the death of his wife, sister and parents. Through it all he remained devoted to his family and career.

He has used the insight that he gained while observing life to help others through his practice, as well as through the radio and newspaper, and as an author.  Since 1985, Dr. Gottlieb has been hosting "Voices in the Family" an award-winning mental health call-in radio show aired on WHYY 90.9 FM. Since 1993, he has been writing a bimonthly column for the Philadelphia Inquirer titled "Inside Out," which include his perspectives on the events in the world around us and the many ways we experience those events. He has also published two books – "Voices in the Family" and "Voices of Conflict; Voices of Healing." His third and newest book, "Letters to Sam: A Grandfather's Lessons on Love, Loss and the Gifts of Life" hit book stores earlier this year.

The book contains a collection of letters he wrote for his grandson, Sam who was diagnosed with autism when he was 14 months old. During 2006 Senior Expo, the book will be available for purchase. Dr. Gottlieb has consented to provide autographed books plates and will sign some books at the expo. Royalties from the book benefit Cure Autism Now and other children's health organizations.

Dr. Gottlieb has lectured to various community and professional groups for over 20 years. He has been called a gift and an inspiration.

"I hope that people will take time out of their busy schedule to stop by 2006 Senior Expo – they will leave armed with great information and resources, as well as having the opportunity to hear from a very motivational speaker," Williams said.

The expo is free to all older adults in the 17th Senatorial District. Those who plan to attend are asked to RSVP to one of Williams’ offices – in King of Prussia at 610-992-9790 or in Havertown at 610-853-5433.

The Plymouth Meeting Mall is on Germantown Pike, a quarter mile west of the Turnpike/I-476 Interchange. People are asked to use the “Storehouse Furniture” entrance, across from the old Ikea.
