SENATE OKS WILLIAMS’ “TAKE A LOVED ONE TO THE DOCTOR” RESOLUTION

HARRISBURG, September 15, 2003 – The state Senate today unanimously adopted a resolution, sponsored by Sen. Connie Williams, designating Sept. 16, 2002 “Take A Loved One To The Doctor Day.”

“This important campaign was brought to my attention by my local NAACP chapter President,” Williams (D-Montgomery/Delaware). “Unfortunately, African-Americans continue to have higher rates of mortality and complications from diseases such as cancer, diabetes and cardiovascular disease.”

Williams said “Take a Loved One to The Doctor Day” is part of a national campaign by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) and ABC Radio that focuses on the health gap between the health of African Americans and the general population.

“The goal of the resolution is to encourage everyone to consider the health care needs of a loved one, particularly those who haven’t been to a doctor recently,” Williams said. “I encourage everyone to attend local health fairs or community events and learn about their health-care options.”

Anyone without health insurance should contact their local health center or health department to ask about free or low-cost care.

“This campaign is one that can serve notice to everyone and benefit all in focusing on keeping physically fit,” Williams said.
