WILLIAMS URGES NURSING STUDENTS TO APPLY FOR LOAN FORGIVENESS HARRISBURG, August 21, 2003 – State Sen. Connie Williams today announced that the application deadline for Nursing Loan Forgiveness for Healthier Futures is August 31. “The average age of nurses in Pennsylvania is rising, and nearly half of the state’s registered nurses plan to leave the profession in the next 10 years,” Williams (D-Montgomery) said. “The nursing shortage will only worsen as the population ages and the need for long-term care increases. The Healthier Futures program encourages young people to choose careers in nursing, and to work in Pennsylvania after completing their educations.” The Aug. 31 deadline is for students who graduate in 2003. Applications for students graduating in 2004 will be available in January 2003. Eligible applicants may have up to 25 percent, or $12,500, of their student loan debt forgiven over three years of qualifying employment. To qualify, students must graduate from an approved nursing education program during or after 2003. They must have at least one AES/PHEAA owned, guaranteed and serviced federal Stafford loan in good standing. Consolidated loans are not eligible for forgiveness under Healthier Futures. Program applications and complete eligibility requirements at http://www.pheaa.org/loanforgiveness/healthier_futures.shtml or by calling 1-800-859-5442. |
