WILLIAMS ANNOUNCES “GROWING GREENER” GRANTS FOR DELCO AND MONTCO

HARRISBURG, September 24, 2003 - State Sen. Connie Williams today announced the release of $75,000 in grants from the state Department of Environmental Protection for projects in Delaware and Montgomery Counties.

“Proper management of streams results not only in safer water to drink, but protects fish and other wildlife that depend upon the stream for habitat,” Williams said. “Flood protection and erosion prevention are also part of responsible stream management. I’m pleased the state is providing the funding for this important work.”

The grant recipients, and the amount of the awards, are:

  • Eastern University, $50,000, for streambank restoration and stabilization. This funding is for Phase III of three on-going waterway and lake improvement projects on the campus property including the establishment of six natural areas using native plantings, stabilization of eroded streambank areas along Gulph Creek, and the removal of three low-head dams on the stream.
  • Haverford College, $25,000, for a stream bank study including redesign of a stream section with green technology.

The Environmental Stewardship and Watershed Protection Grant Program, known as “Growing Greener,” is administered by the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (DEP).
