DOMESTIC VIOLENCE AWARENESS EVENT NEXT WEEK

HARRISBURG, OCT. 12 – Domestic violence is a crime that breeds in isolation, which is one of the reasons state Sen. Connie Williams is again hosting an event geared toward raising awareness of the issue.

Williams is hosting a free screening and discussion of “An Empty Place at the Table” on Thursday, Oct. 20th at 7 p.m. in the Bryn Mawr Film Institute.

“October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month, which is a good first step in drawing attention to the insidious crime of domestic violence, but to truly make a difference…to lower the statistics on victims of this crime…to save lives…everyone must become educated. And not just in October,” Williams said.

“I began hosting events to raise awareness to domestic violence a number of years ago, not just to talk about domestic violence, but to disseminate information about services that can help people end the cycle of abuse. If more people know where they can turn for the help that they need, less people will be injured or killed as a result of domestic violence.”

This year’s event will feature a film created by the Women’s Resource Center, Inc. of Scranton. The documentary, based on the extraordinary art exhibition created to memorialize women and children murdered in acts of domestic violence, is narrated by Academy Award-winning actress Susan Sarandon. Following the film, a panel of local experts on various aspects of domestic violence will talk about domestic violence. Audience participation is encouraged. Local cable television stations have been invited to cover the event. Media coverage is encouraged.

Seating at Bryn Mawr Film Institute is limited to 350. Doors open at 6:30 p.m., the film beings at 7 p.m. and lasts for 28 minutes.
