WILLIAMS NAMED TO SPECIAL SESSION PROPERTY TAX COMMITTEE

HARRISBURG, OCT. 19 – State Sen. Connie Williams said that she looked forward to the challenge of working with her colleagues on legislation that will deliver property tax relief, as one of the members of the Legislation Committee for the special session on property tax relief.

“I am committed to working with my colleagues, both Democrat and Republican, to find a way to bring property tax relief to the taxpayers,” Williams said. “My role on the committee will provide me the opportunity to be closely involved in all of the legislation that is offered.”

Williams is one of nine Democratic Senators to serve on the committee. This committee will serve as the gatekeeper to all property tax relief proposals. A number of proposals have already been offered, which is the first step in working toward a final legislative proposal to deliver property tax relief.

“The final plan will likely be a blend of proposals,” Williams said. “The plan must meet a few benchmarks – it must cut all homeowner property taxes and give local governments the flexibility to craft even greater cuts in property taxes in the future.”

Senate Democrats unveiled a plan for property tax relief in late June. The Democratic plan would cut taxes, control school district spending and give voters a say in whether they receive their share in gaming funds for property tax cuts. Governor Ed Rendell called for the special legislative session in mid-September.
