ENVIRONMENTAL GRANTS AWARDED

HARRISBURG, NOV. 9 – State Sen. Connie Williams announced that more than $100,000 in state funds were awarded for two watershed projects in the 17th Senatorial District.

Lower Merion Conservancy and Lower Merion Township were selected to receive $64,399 in Environmental Stewardship and Watershed Protection funding for the second phase of the restoration of West Mill Creek Park. The project will complete the construction phase of a lager stream bank stabilization/wetland enhancement project started under a former grant.

Villanova University was selected to receive $46,127 funding under the same program for the evaluation and restoration of an 85 year old stormwater infiltration pit that was found in front of a building on campus. The university has proposed to use the project as a case study on the effect of infiltration for long periods on soils and groundwater.

“These grants will help to clean up watersheds and enhance environmental protection,” Williams said. “Through forward-thinking projects like these, Pennsylvania will be assured a healthy environment that will support a good quality of life for all Pennsylvanians.”

Grants were awarded by the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection.
