SEN. WILLIAMS ON EMINENT DOMAIN

 To the Editor:

Earlier this month, I asked to have my name removed from a bill that would change the eminent domain laws in Pennsylvania. I had initially co-sponsored the legislation, because of the positive and negative impacts of eminent domain on projects such as redevelopment in Norristown and the revitalization of Ardmore.

Those interests remain. Two weeks ago when I removed my name it was clear to me that the bill sponsor was more interested in fast-tracking his legislation than in fully exploring the issue and the use of eminent domain in Pennsylvania.

It is important that the legislature does not simply rubberstamp a legislative initiative. Many Senators and organizations have voiced concerns over the process. A vote originally scheduled for this week has been postponed until December to allow continued discussion.

I continue to support efforts to engage in a meaningful conversation about eminent domain. I hope to have the opportunity to support a legislative initiative that provides changes to Pennsylvania’s eminent domain laws that will address deficiencies and truly protect the diverse interests of the communities, not only in my district but throughout the Commonwealth.

 Sincerely,
 Connie Williams
State Senator
17th District
