PERSONAL INCOME TAX GUIDE NOW AVAILABLE ON WEB

HARRISBURG, November 19, 2002 - - State Senator Connie Williams (D-Delaware/Montgomery) today announced that the Pennsylvania Department of Revenue has released its first-ever Personal Income Tax (PIT) Guide. The guide -- available on the PA PowerPort at www.state.pa.us, PA Keyword: "PIT Guide" -- was created to help answer a wide range of tax questions beyond those addressed in the PA-40 instruction booklet.

"The PIT Guide is a great resource for Commonwealth taxpayers and tax professionals," Williams said. "Individuals with complex tax situations will find the PIT Guide to be very helpful."

The department has made the PA-40 and its instructions as simple as possible for individuals with only wages and interest income to report. However, the new guide will be most beneficial to individuals with more complex filing situations, especially those with multiple business interests.

"This resource will answer many people’s questions through comprehensive, yet easy-to-use information on a large number of topics," Williams said.

The guide is organized topically around the eight classes of Pennsylvania personal income and includes examples illustrating statutory requirements and filing rules. The PIT Guide also offers an overview of the differences between federal requirements and Pennsylvania provisions.

The PIT Guide will only be available online to enable the department to update the document easily with clarifications and changes due to new tax rules or procedures.

Senator Williams said that the following Pennsylvania Personal Income Taxes can be paid by phone or online with a credit card: current year tax return payments, estimated tax payments, and delinquent tax payments.

Pennsylvania personal taxes can be paid by phone or online by using the following credit card service provider:

Official Payments Corp.

Phone: 1-800-2PAYTAX (1-800-272-9829)
