WILLIAMS FIGHTS HUNGER WITH PHILABUNDANCE FOOD DRIVE HARRISBURG, November 20, 2002 - - Senator Connie Williams-Montgomery/Delaware) today announced that non-perishable food donations are being accepted through December 23 at her Havertown District Office with the help of Philabundance. Philabudance is a not-for-profit organization that collects surplus food and transports it free of charge every day to the Greater Philadelphia food cupboards, emergency shelters and kitchens. "Hunger affects over 430,000 people in the Greater Philadelphia region," Williams said. "Everyone can fight hunger this holiday season by participating in the food drive." Williams said those interested in making a donation should bring new, unopened, non-perishable food items to a collection bin at her Havertown District Office located in the Manoa Shopping Center, 1305 West Chester Pike, Suite 39, Havertown, PA 19083. The following are approved food items: canned meats or fish, canned beans, infant formula, boxed pasta, shelf-stable milk, and canned vegetables. The following food items cannot be used: anything in a glass container, jarred baby foods, opened containers or boxes, meat, produce, anything that requires refrigeration, prepared foods, and bread and baked goods. Williams said that most supermarkets have a section that features "giant size" or "institutional size" canned goods which are especially useful. "If you are unable to donate food, please considered making a financial contribution to Philabudance," Williams said. "For every dollar you donate, Philabundance can access eight dollars worth of nutritious food." Monetary contributions may be sent to: Philabudance, P.O. Box 37555, Philadelphia, PA 19148.
